As a standalone test the caloric can take up to 45 minutes to complete, it is performed with a hearing test (Audiogram and Impedance) and VNG.

A patient undergoing a Caloric test will have video recording goggles placed over the eyes to allow for observations of eye movement. The ears are then individually irrigated with a temperature controlled airflow.  NSAudiology uses Air rather than water Calorics. This causes a sensation of rotary vertigo or dizziness which is considered a normal response of the vestibular system. As this is an artificial stimulation of the vestibular system the symptoms of dizziness experienced dissipate within minutes.

Preparing for your appointment

  • Ensure your ears have been cleared of wax, you may need to visit your doctor or your Ear Nose and Throat specialist for this.
  • If you need us to clean your ears using micro suction please advise when making the appointment.
  • If you currently take medication for your balance, please stop taking them 48 hours prior to testing. It is a priority to stop taking Stemetil and Torocan as they affect test results. If there are any concerns regarding this please contact us or your Doctor. Please consult your prescribing Doctor before ceasing any medications.
  • Please refrain from drinking any alcohol 48 hours prior to testing.
  • If you feel you need to eat before testing please have only a light snack.

The Day of your appointment
